'If history were taught in the form of stories, it would never be forgotten' — Rudyard Kipling
Welcome to Living History, an exhibit which unlocks the deeply rich history of the land upon which Birkenhead Point stands today.
As Sydney’s most loved premium brand outlet with more than 120 local and international brands, water-front dining and exciting entertainment, customers who visit our centre can expect nothing short of a memorable day out. Glimpses into Birkenhead Point's past have been retained in the bones of our magnificent building, with original brickwork and fixtures dating back to the early 1900s, adding to the charm that is Birkenhead Point.
As the world continues to advance at an ever increasing rate, it is now more crucial than ever to uncover the past and cement our stories.
From hundreds and thousands of years ago, when the Wangal Clan tended and nurtured the land, through a diverse industrial era, to the present day, this project has been created to unearth the significant moments in the fabric of our past.
The first key to unlock our past ...
To begin your Living History journey, we invite you to view the flow of history and the events that shaped it at our magnificent physical timeline installation, located on Level 3, near Bed Bath N' Table. The installation is truly a work of art brought to life together with VANDAL and Indigenous Artist and proud Barkindji woman, Maddison Gibbs. Both artist and activist, Maddison's practice examines dual histories - focusing on stories of past and present Aboriginal societies and spirit. A multidisciplinary artist, Gibbs works across a wide spectrum of cultural praxis, utilising many methods and ideologies. Current thematics include intergenerational stories of contemporary Aboriginal affairs - with a focus on telling women's narratives.
Continue your journey through augmented reality ...
See history come to life in immersive augmented reality! Continuing on from our timeline installation, uncover 10 AR activation points around the centre, each with a different image and story to explore.
We can't wait to unlock our history with you. This is Living History.
